Patients in South Auckland can now use a high-quality PET-CT service at SRG Radiology in Manukau.

This will be the first PET-CT in South Auckland.

This area of Auckland has not previously had much investment in this technology. What to expect?

Before a PET-CT
Before a PET-CT scan, you will need to follow some specific instructions to ensure accurate results. Here’s what to expect:
1. Fasting: You will likely need to fast for several hours, usually about 4-6 hours before the scan. Only water is typically allowed.
2. Medication: Inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking, as some may need to be paused.
3. Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes and avoid jewelry or any metal objects, as you may need to remove them before the scan.
4. Medical History: Be ready to discuss your medical history, allergies, and any recent illnesses or surgeries with the healthcare team.
5. Tracer Injection: You will receive an injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer. After the injection, you’ll need to wait about an hour for the tracer to circulate through your body.
6. Relaxation: It’s important to stay relaxed and minimise movement during the waiting period to ensure the tracer distributes evenly.
During a PET-CT Scan
During a PET-CT scan, here’s what you can expect:
1. Preparation: After waiting for about an hour for the radioactive tracer to distribute throughout your body, you will be taken to the scanning room.
2. Positioning: You will lie down on a table that slides into the PET-CT machine. The technician will help position you comfortably, usually lying flat on your back.
3. Scanning: The table will slowly move through the scanner. It’s important to stay as still as possible to ensure clear images. The scanner is a large, donut-shaped machine, and you will pass through its center.
4. Duration: The scanning process typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour. The machine may make some clicking or whirring noises, but the procedure itself is painless.
5. Communication: You will be able to communicate with the technician through an intercom system if you have any concerns or need assistance.
6. Completion: After the scan is complete, you can usually get up and return to your normal activities right away. The radioactive tracer will naturally leave your body over the next few hours.
After a PET-CT Scan
After a PET-CT scan, here’s what you can expect:
1. Immediate Aftercare: You can usually resume your normal activities right away. There is no recovery time needed.
2. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help flush the radioactive tracer out of your body. The tracer is typically eliminated through urine within a few hours.
3. Results: The images from the scan will be analysed by a radiologist. This process may take a few days. Your doctor will then discuss the results with you at a follow-up appointment.
4. Side Effects: Most people do not experience side effects from the scan. However, if you feel unusual symptoms or discomfort, contact your doctor.
